Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday during a video conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin that stable and resilient relations between China and Russia will help counter uncertainties in the outside world.
Xi stressed that in 2025, he is ready to work with Putin to further deepen relations between the two countries so that they can face external challenges through the stability and strength of their cooperation. The goal is to promote the development and revitalization of both China and Russia and uphold international justice.
He said the two sides should continue to deepen strategic cooperation, strengthen mutual support and protect the legitimate interests of their countries. Xi also called for further developing bilateral relations and strengthening practical cooperation.
Putin, in return, said that Russia and China have always trusted, supported and treated each other as equal partners. He stressed that cooperation between the two countries is in the interests of their people and will not be affected by changes in the international situation.
The vitality of Sino-Russian relations
During Tuesday's meeting, Xi noted that he and Putin met three times in 2024 and reached a number of important agreements. He also recalled that this year the two countries celebrated 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and their partnership is increasingly strong, characterised by long-term good neighbourly relations, strategic coordination and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Xi appreciated that Sino-Russian Year of Culture was full of significant events, practical cooperation between the two countries continued steadily and bilateral trade maintained its growth momentum. China and Russia also worked closely together on multifaceted platformssuch as United Nations (UN), Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS, contributing to the reform and development of global governance.
Xi recalled that this year is also 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's Resistance against Japanese aggression, the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union and the World Anti-Fascist Waras well as 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
In this context, Xi said China and Russia should use this historic milestone to defend the UN-based international system, uphold the victory in World War II and promote adherence to the principles of the UN Charter. He stressed the need to of true multilateralism and added that China, as the SCO chair, will work with Russia and other member states to promote quality development and greater organisational accountability.
He also called for enhanced cooperation within the BRICSto write a new chapter of unity and independence for Global South.
Putin said he was pleased with the positive developments in mutual trade and energy cooperation, the growing number of tourists between the two countries and close communication and cooperation in multilateral fora.
Russia strongly supports the fact that Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory, and strongly opposes any form of "Taiwan independence", Putin stressed.
He recalled that China and Russia had shed blood together 80 years ago in the fight against the invaders and successfully defended their national sovereignty and dignity. In this context, he announced that the two countries would jointly celebrate 80th Anniversary of the Victory in World War II and will defend its results.
Putin also expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation with China on multilateral issues and actively participate in world peace and development.
The meeting between the two leaders took place shortly before the Chinese The Feast of Spring, and Putin therefore concluded by expressing his wish Happy New Year President Xi and the Chinese people.
