Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that China is ready to work with all countries to promote a correct view of human rights and to reform and improve global governance in this area.
In his video address at the opening session of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Wang stressed that human rights governance should be based on a people-centered principle. He also rejected any interference in the internal affairs of states under the pretext of human rights and undermining national sovereignty or the security of the people.
According to Wang, the right to life and development should be prioritized as fundamental human rights. He also stressed the need to reject double standards and the politicisation of human rights issues. He called for international cooperation and exchange of experiences to contribute to building a world based on peaceful development and mutual prosperity.
On the same day, China's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Chen Xu, called on the international community to actively participate in the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) initiative. Chen stressed the importance of joint efforts to protect civilians in conflict zones and promote humanitarian principles. He said China is determined to continue diplomatic efforts for peace and humanitarian assistance to developing countries, especially in Africa, and to support international humanitarian organizations.
