During his first inspection trip after this year's session of the Chinese Parliament, President Xi Jinping visited the southwestern province of Guizhou, where he called for strengthening high-quality development through innovation, environmental protection and deepening reforms.
Xi described quality development as a key element of China's modernisation. Guizhou province, once considered the poorest in the country, has made significant progress, lifting over 9.2 million people out of poverty since 2012. By 2024, its GDP will have grown to 2.27 trillion yuan (approximately US$312 billion), an annual growth rate of 5.3 %, above the national average.
Guizhou has also become a pilot centre for the development of the big data industry, with 47 big data centres currently operating or under construction. The focus on ecology has yielded results: the area's forest cover has reached 63 % and air quality in major cities met "excellent" standards for 99.1 1 % days in 2024.
President Xi also visited Dong village in Liping county, where he discussed rural development with locals. He stressed the importance of preserving the traditional culture of ethnic minorities and linking it to tourism. Zhaoxing Dong Village has become a success story, with over one million tourists visiting the village in 2023, generating revenue of 1.02 billion yuan and raising the average disposable income of local residents to 41,600 yuan.
Xi expressed his wish that the lives of villagers continue to improve with each passing year.
