WASHINGTON - 31 March. Washington is not yet ready to announce an end to the U.S. military operation against Iran or halt efforts to restore normal conditions for shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump said.
„At some point, I will. Not quite yet,“ the US leader said in an interview with CBS News. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported, citing sources, that Trump told his advisers he only wants to end the campaign against Iran if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed to shipping.
The United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran on 28 February. Major Iranian cities were hit, including Tehran. The White House justified the attack by alleging missile and nuclear threats from Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a retaliatory operation targeting sites in Israel. US military bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were also hit. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other key Iranian leaders were killed in a joint US-Israeli attack.
The Iranian authorities subsequently decided to close the Strait of Hormuz to ships associated with the US, Israel and countries that supported the aggression against the Islamic Republic. During the conflict, several tankers were attacked for passing through the Strait without Tehran's permission. On 25 March, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran had allowed allied countries, including Russia, India, Iraq, China and Pakistan, to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
