London/Washington - The UK has conducted a large-scale test of technology designed to power hypersonic missiles. The test was described as a "significant milestone" in the development of new weapon systems, the UK Ministry of Defence announced. The tests took place on US soil and were conducted in cooperation with US partners.
The aim of the test was to verify the functionality of key components of the propulsion system designed for hypersonic missiles, which are characterized by their ability to overcome the speed of sound several times and to operate at altitudes where they are difficult to intercept and disable by traditional means of defence.
Hypersonic technologies are a growing area of interest for a number of world powers. The UK, along with the US, Russia, China and others, is seeking to strengthen its defence capabilities and keep pace with global developments. According to the UK Ministry of Defence, these technologies have the potential to fundamentally change the strategic balance in defence.
Details of the specific test results have not been made public. However, the ministry said the project will continue with further phases of development and testing, with the aim of producing a fully functional and deployable system in the coming years.
