"China will strive to reach peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060" "By 2030, China will reduce carbon dioxide emissions intensity per unit of GDP by more than 65 percent compared to 2005"... Given the enormous challenges and threats posed by climate change, China is actively approaching the problem with concrete steps and providing "China solutions" for global climate governance.
The survey, conducted by CGTN in collaboration with Peking University and the New Institute of International Communication (NEIIC), involving 7,658 respondents from 38 countries, showed that 83.5 % respondents positively evaluate China's efforts and contributions to global climate governance. They believe that China's proactive steps to combat climate change have brought confidence and strength to the collective efforts to build a clean and beautiful world.
In recent years, China has been accelerating its green transformation: by 2022, China's carbon intensity has fallen by more than 51 % compared to 2005. By June 2023, more than half of new energy vehicles were on the road in China. The installed capacity of wind and photovoltaic power in China has been ranked first in the world for several years. Forest area and volume continue to grow, with China ranking first in the world in forest cover.
83.5 % of global respondents believe that China has made positive progress in controlling greenhouse gas emissions. 80.3 % think that China has set an example for the international community in promoting clean energy infrastructure. 80.2 % agrees with China's efforts to promote green transformation in traditional industries; 85.4 % appreciates China's efforts in reforestation and increasing green coverage. 82.4 % respondents believe China's accelerated transition to clean energy shows ambition and commitment in addressing global climate change.
China is actively working to address climate change at home, while also supporting developing countries, particularly in South and East Asia and Africa, to build their capacity to tackle climate change. Its initiatives include providing remote climate monitoring satellites, photovoltaic systems and lighting technology to Africa, as well as setting up low-carbon demonstration zones in Southeast Asia. In the survey, 82.6 % global respondents rate China's efforts to help developing countries combat climate change positively, and 82.7 % believe China has contributed valuable insights and solutions for global climate governance.
Earth is the common and only home of humanity. China places great emphasis on tackling climate change, which has become part of its national strategy. The concept of an ecological civilisation and its construction is enshrined in the Constitution of the People's Republic of China, and climate action is part of the national economic and social development plans. In response, 79.7 % of global respondents believe this shows China's firm commitment and responsibility in climate governance, and 85.3 % consider China as a leader and key actor in global climate governance.
The survey included respondents from developed countries such as the United States, Germany and Japan, as well as developing countries such as Argentina, India and Kenya.
