TEHRAN - Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has rejected talks with the US, saying Washington is not really interested in solving problems.
"The reason why some unscrupulous governments engage in negotiations is not to solve problems but to advance their own interests. The Islamic Republic of Iran will certainly not meet their expectations," said in remarks made at a meeting with Iranian officials and broadcast by Iran's SNN television.
The comment was in response to a letter from US President Donald Trump proposing talks on Iran's nuclear programme.
According to Khamenei, the West's double standards are "a disgrace to civilization." It is not possible to acknowledge the crimes of Nazi Germany during the Second World War and at the same time deny the crimes of the Israelis in the Gaza Strip.
Trump announced his proposal regarding the talks in a post on the social network Pravda on Friday, adding that he had sent a message to Khamenei. Iran's mission to the UN told TASS news agency that it had not received the message. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told AFP that Tehran will not negotiate with Washington as long as the Trump administration pursues a policy of maximum pressure on the country.
