International Theatre Day was established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). The day is celebrated annually on 27 March by all ITI National Centres and, with them, by the entire international theatre community. Various theatre events are organised to mark the occasion.
World Theatre Day was proposed first in Helsinki and then in Vienna at the 9th World Congress of the International Theatre Institute in June 1961 by President Arvi Kivimaa on behalf of the Finnish Centre of the International Theatre Institute. The ITI National Centres, of which there are now nearly 100 worldwide, celebrate World Theatre Day in many and varied ways.
Each year, an eminent theatre personality or a person of heart and spirit from a different field is invited to share their thoughts on theatre and harmony between peoples. What is known as the International Message is translated into more than 20 languages, read to tens of thousands of audiences before performances in theatres around the world, and printed in hundreds of newspapers.
In the Czech Republic, World Theatre Day is celebrated with Theatre Night, which takes place next Saturday around 27 March.
