ALGIERS - Finally, a return to diplomacy. Eight days on, the last eight months of open crisis between France and Algeria now seem to be in reverse mode. After a phone call on 31 March between the two presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboun and Emmanuel Macron Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot left for Algiers on 7 April. This time, diplomatic relations were conducted through traditional channels, with the President of the Republic and the Head of Diplomacy. And not through the political agitation of the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau, who decided to make it an election issue.
The Foreign Minister was received by his counterpart Ahmed Attaf, then Abdelmadjid Tebbouneh. After "in-depth discussions" agreed on "the early reactivation of all cooperation mechanisms" between the two countries in the areas of security (particularly in the Sahel), migration, judicial affairs, economic and memorial issues, and the Commission, chaired by Benjamin Stora, has resumed its work.
