BRUSSELS - EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas announced today that she has called an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers for Monday. The reason is a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters.
According to Kallas, it is essential that Ukraine and European countries also participate directly in any agreements between Washington and Moscow. "Ukraine's future cannot be determined without its voice and without the voice of Europe," the EU diplomatic chief said, adding that the EU must discuss the upcoming Trump-Putin summit in advance and align a common position.
The summit between the US and Russian leaders is reported to be the first direct, top-level meeting since the start of the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Key topics are expected to be the terms of a possible ceasefire, the issue of security guarantees and the post-war order in the region. But Western diplomats warn that without Kiev's participation, any agreement could lead to a weakening of Ukraine's position.
Kallas stressed that the EU must act in a united manner and recalled the political, military and humanitarian support Ukraine has received from European countries so far. "Our security is closely linked to Ukraine's security," she said. She added that Monday's meeting of foreign ministers would serve to discuss joint diplomatic steps and prepare a coordinated response to the results of the US-Russia summit.
The extraordinary meeting will take place in Brussels and is expected to be attended by representatives of Ukrainian diplomacy. According to diplomatic sources, the EU will also consider possible further sanctions against Russia and ways to strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities should peace talks fail.
