LONDON - A key round of trade talks between representatives of the United States and China ended overnight today, aimed at settling a long-running trade dispute between the two economies. Citing statements from representatives of both delegations, the negotiating teams reached agreement on a general framework that could lead to a final settlement of tensions.
According to the information available, the framework builds on the previous agreement reached in Geneva last month and also takes into account the results of the recent telephone conversation between the presidents of the two countries. The aim is now to submit this proposal to the highest officials for final approval.
The agreement could help stabilise global markets and restore confidence between the world's two largest economies. Delegation representatives described the outcome of the talks as a "constructive step forward" but acknowledged that a number of details would still need to be worked out to fully resolve the dispute.
The next phase of negotiations is expected to take place in the coming weeks, once the leaders have assessed the framework and, where appropriate, proposed additions.
