NEW DELHI, Sept 14 . More than 70 people have died in mass riots in Nepal, local authorities said.
"A total of 72 people died. Another 191 injured are currently being treated in various hospitals and medical facilities across the country," news portal Nepal News reported, citing government official Ek Narayan Aryal. People died in protests on 8 September and as a result of the subsequent arson and rioting on 9 September, he said.
Riots broke out in Kathmandu and other Nepali cities earlier this week following protests against corruption and a ban on social media. The main protesters were students and activists from the Gen-Z youth movement. Protesters set fire to government buildings, including the parliament, the Supreme Court, and the prosecutor's office, and attacked the homes of politicians and officials.
