The International Union of Journalists (IUJ) expresses its deep concern and strongly condemns the increasing number of attacks on journalists and media organizations around the world.
„The primary duty of working journalists is to provide accurate, factual and balanced information to the public. Our work is strictly professional, free of political bias and ulterior motives. Yet journalists are increasingly becoming the first targets in areas of war and conflict. The IUJ stresses that an attack on a media organisation is not just the destruction of a building; it is a direct attack on freedom of speech, the public's right to information and fundamental democratic values,“ the IUJ wrote in a statement.
The IUJ warned that journalists working in conflict zones face extreme danger and risk their lives every day to do their jobs. „Their role is crucial in documenting the reality on the ground, exposing human rights violations and informing the global public. Any attack or harm directed against them or their organisations is completely unacceptable.“
„The Executive calls on all parties involved in conflicts to respect international law and agreements that guarantee the safety of journalists. Media organizations must be considered civilian spaces and under no circumstances must they be considered military targets,“ said the union.
„We call on international organisations, human rights institutions and governments to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of journalists and media facilities in conflict areas. We demand that those responsible for attacks on media workers be held accountable and face severe legal sanctions.“
According to its statement, the IUJ stands in firm solidarity with all affected media professionals and institutions. „We reaffirm our commitment to press freedom and demand a safe environment in which journalists can do their work without fear, threats or intimidation.“
