NEW YORK, March 22. Some NATO member countries are working on measures to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said.
„I know the [U.S.] president was upset because he felt that European and other allies were too slow. The good news is that, as of Thursday, a group of 22 countries, most of them from NATO, but also Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, are coming together to implement his vision of ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz is free again as soon as possible. So now we are planning,“ he said in an interview with Fox News.
He also said he has maintained contacts with US leader Donald Trump despite his criticism of NATO. „We have spoken several times this week,“ he noted.
Rutte said on 2 March that NATO was not planning to participate in a US-Israeli military operation against Iran. On Friday, the U.S. president said NATO is not helping the U.S. reopen the Strait of Hormuz because the organization is „weak“ and „they know we're going to do it for them.“.
