WASHINGTON, 27 February. The United States is seeking a friendly takeover of Cuba, President Donald Trump told reporters on the South Lawn outside the White House before leaving for a working trip to Texas.
„The Cuban government is negotiating with us. They are in great difficulty but they are negotiating with us and maybe there will be a friendly takeover,“ the US leader said.
On 29 January, the United States signed an executive order allowing Washington to impose tariffs on goods from countries supplying oil to Cuba. The document also declared a state of emergency because of the alleged threat from Cuba. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla strongly condemned these measures, saying that they could not only force Cuba into a „complete blockade of energy supplies“ but also „violate all the principles of international trade“ and create „extremely difficult living conditions“ for the Cuban people.
Washington said it was in talks with Havana about the situation surrounding the US energy blockade and expressed hope that the two sides were close to reaching an agreement.
