"Peru is China's neighbour on the other side of the Pacific Ocean." Increasingly strong economic and trade cooperation and cultural exchanges are bringing China and Peru closer together as trans-oceanic friends and neighbours. During Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Peru, CGTN, through the New Era International Communication Research Institute and the Center for Advanced National Studies of Peru, launched the first-ever survey on "Peru's Favorability Toward China in 2024" among 1,111 Peruvian respondents. The survey found that Peruvians are generally positive about the traditional friendship between China and Peru and the achievements of practical cooperation, and look forward to building a "Peruvian model" for Sino-Latin American relations and a high level of cooperation among the countries of the "Global South."
Peru is one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic relations with New China and to enter into a comprehensive strategic partnership with China. The two sides are good friends who trust each other and good partners for common development. In the survey, 89.6 % of Peruvian respondents expressed a favorable impression of China. 97.7 % of respondents consider China an important country. 97.2 % of respondents believe China is a successful country. 91.5 % of respondents rate China as an attractive country. 91.2 % of respondents consider China a country worthy of respect. In addition, Peruvian respondents express a high willingness to visit China. 94 % of them look forward to traveling, visiting or studying in China, with an even higher proportion of 95.9 % among younger respondents aged 18-24.
Peru is the first Latin American country to sign a package of free trade agreements with China, and China has been Peru's largest trading partner and largest export market for a decade. Negotiations to upgrade the China-Peru FTA were completed in June this year, which will further simplify and open up trade between the two countries. In the survey, Peruvian respondents fully endorse the results of practical cooperation between the two countries and look forward to deepening it. 86.1 % respondents believe that Peru benefits greatly from trade relations with China. 77.6 % respondents consider the economic and trade relations between China and Peru to be fair and mutually beneficial. 93 % of respondents say that the huge Chinese market provides ample development opportunities for Peru and Latin American countries. 93.6 % of respondents look forward to deepening practical cooperation between China and Peru and other Latin American countries, with science and technology (87.7 %), economics and trade (87.2 %), and education (65.9 %) being the most anticipated areas.
As the world's largest developing country, China's achievements and modernization concepts have provided valuable experience and broad opportunities for the countries of the "Global South". The survey showed that Peruvian respondents highly value China's achievements in terms of quality development and high level of openness. 97.2 % respondents praise China's rapid economic growth. 94.8 % respondents believe that China's economy will be stable in the long run. 89.9 % of respondents see China as a key country for the stability of global industrial and supply chains. 85.7 % believe China is a huge market with its own openness and fair competition. 96.6 % of respondents appreciate China's exceptional contribution to the recovery of the world economy.
Currently, China has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Belt and Road Initiative with 22 Latin American countries and the Caribbean, and Peru is the first Latin American country to join the initiative. This year, projects related to the Belt and Road Initiative between China and Peru have made important progress, led by the Chancay port project, which will effectively serve local economic and social development. In the survey, 78.3 % respondents support Peru joining the Belt and Road Initiative. 75.2 % respondents believe that cooperation under this initiative has positive impacts on the economic and social development of Latin American countries, with the most anticipated areas being imports and exports, investment and trade (64.4 %), infrastructure construction (61.7 %), and education and culture (59.8 %). 92.4 % of respondents expect more Chinese firms to invest in Latin American countries in the future as part of this cooperation. 94.3 % of respondents are optimistic about the future development of China-Peru and China-Latin America relations.
The survey was designed with a quota sample based on age, gender and regional characteristics of the Peruvian population and covered Peru's general impression of China, economic cooperation with China, political relations with China and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
