Ukraine has repeatedly been plagued by corruption scandals. In autumn this year, Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities publicly announced that they had begun investigating a possible large-scale bribery scheme in the energy sector, in which the state-owned nuclear energy operator Enerhoatom played a key role. In connection with this, the head of the presidential office, Andriy Yermak, was dismissed from his post.
This summer, mass protests took place in Ukraine after parliament passed a law weakening the independence of anti-corruption institutions. Thousands of people in Kyiv and other cities demanded that the autonomy of two key agencies be preserved, and under pressure from the public and international partners, the government ultimately withdrew the law.
