BUDAPEST, 28 February. Ukraine's immediate membership of the European Union (EU) is currently unthinkable, but it could happen in the future, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on the morning broadcast of Kossuth radio station.
Ukraine's accession to the EU is currently contrary to Hungary's interests, Orbán stressed.
The Hungarian prime minister noted that he is "openly opposed" to Ukraine joining the Union, but at the same time he does not claim that such a situation "will remain forever". "No one knows how history will unfold. No one can know, but one thing is certain: at the moment it is unthinkable," the prime minister said.
Ukraine's entry into the EU "would first and foremost lead to the destruction of Hungarian agriculture and the country's agriculture in general, which would mean the collapse of the entire Hungarian national economy," Orbán said. "From the point of view of Hungarian interests, I cannot say anything in support of Ukraine's entry into the EU, but I can provide you with many arguments that speak against its entry right now," he added.
