WASHINGTON (AP) - Making American Coca-Cola great again? President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Coca-Cola has agreed to use real cane sugar in its flagship soft drink in the U.S. at his suggestion - though the company has not confirmed the move.
Any switch from high-fructose corn syrup in Coca-Cola sold in the United States would bring Coca-Cola more in line with its practices in other countries, including Mexico and Australia. But it would not affect Trump's favorite drink, Diet Coke, which uses aspartame as a calorie-free beverage.
"I spoke with Coca-Cola about using REAL cane sugar in Coca-Cola in the United States and they agreed to it," Trump wrote on his social media page. "I would like to thank everyone in power at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them - you'll see. It's just better!"
A spokesman for Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Co. said in a statement that the company appreciates Trump's enthusiasm and promised to share more details about the new products soon. Coca-Cola did not comment. But the company has long indulged American cane sugar fans by importing glass bottles of Mexican Coke into the U.S., dating back to 2005.
