China's President Xi Jinping on Monday called for improving global digital and trade governance and building a world economy focused on innovation and openness at the second session of the 19th G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Xi stressed the need to reform the World Trade Organization (WTO), against unilateralism and protectionism, and to restore the normal functioning of the trade dispute settlement mechanism. He called on G20 member states to see mutual development as an opportunity rather than a challenge, and to focus on partnership instead of rivalry.
He also stressed the need to accelerate the transition to a green and low-carbon economy. In his view, it is crucial to replace traditional energies with cleaner methods in a stable and well-managed process, while avoiding the politicisation of economic issues and protectionist steps in green development.
Xi also called for an immediate end to the fighting in Gaza and support for humanitarian aid and reconstruction in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. To address the Ukraine crisis, he called for de-escalation and the search for a political solution.
The speech focused on promoting peace and the development of the global economy through cooperation and innovation.
