{"id":26232,"date":"2025-04-21T06:19:51","date_gmt":"2025-04-21T05:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gnews.cz\/?p=26232"},"modified":"2025-04-28T18:10:48","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T17:10:48","slug":"renowned-economists-sign-anti-tariff-statement-on-trumps-tariff-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gnews.cz\/en\/ekonomika\/renomovani-ekonomove-podepsali-protitarifni-prohlaseni-k-trumpove-celni-politice\/","title":{"rendered":"Renowned economists sign 'anti-tariff statement' on Trump's tariff policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>More than 970 people, including dozens of top economists, have signed <em>\"anti-tariff statement\"<\/em>in which they criticize the tariff policy of the administration of US President Donald Trump as <em>\"flawed\"<\/em> and warn of possible <em>\"self-inflicted recession\"<\/em>, media reports said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter, signed by renowned economists including Nobel laureates James Heckman and Vernon Smith, was sent out over the weekend and by Sunday morning had 976 signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this \"Statement on Trade and Tariffs: A Statement of Principles on American Prosperity,\" the authors condemn Trump's \"reciprocal\" tariffs that affect more than 180 countries and regions around the world. \"The 'reciprocal' tariffs are <em>\"calculated according to a flawed and improvised formula that has no basis in economic reality\"<\/em>, the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 2, Trump announced sweeping tariffs against U.S. trading partners, calling the day <em>\"the day of liberation\"<\/em>. Just a week later, however, he ordered a 90-day pause for the highest tariffs, leaving a base rate of 10 percent for most countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump's tariff policy has triggered massive sell-offs in stock markets as well as retaliatory tariffs and other countermeasures by countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\"We expect American workers to bear the brunt of this misguided policy in the form of higher prices and the risk of a self-inflicted recession,\"<\/em> the letter states.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump says the tariffs are intended to reverse the persistent overall trade deficit and help boost US manufacturing.
