Beijing, the capital of China, is a city that combines rich history and vibrant vitality. As the nation's political and cultural centre, it is home to the highest state authorities and many prestigious universities - from the majestic Great Hall of the People to world-renowned universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University. At every turn, Beijing embodies the spirit of the \u201eCapital of China\u201c.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foundation of Beijing's spirit is the colour red. It is no different not only because it has witnessed the glorious journey of the Communist Party of China from its awakening to its mighty rise, but above all because the city itself carries a magnificent, warm and positive energy. From the flag-raising ceremony in Tiananmen Square to the numerous red monuments scattered around the city, this \u201ered thread\u201c is Beijing's most distinctive feature and presents an open, confident and thriving image of China to the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Among Beijing's many historic buildings, the most typical are not the imperial gardens, but the traditional courtyards in alleyways - the so-called si-che-yuan. This angular, enclosed type of dwelling follows the Eastern philosophy of \u201ethe unity of heaven and man\u201c. The four wings of the house surround a central courtyard that is closed to outside light and open to the inside. The courtyard thus ensures the privacy of the family while creating warm neighbourly relations. The blue bricks, the grey tiles, the ornate gates, the decorative wall - every detail reveals the meticulous, orderly and ritualistic lifestyle of the ancient Beijingers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garnet trees often grow in the yard and there are porcelain tanks with goldfish. People enjoy the shade under the gazebo in summer and the warm sunshine in the courtyard in winter. This peaceful and contented way of life is the soft core hidden behind Beijing's majestic fa\u00e7ade. Here, the regal splendour of red walls and yellow tiles meets the simple wisdom of grey bricks and tiles; modern skyscrapers coexist in harmony with traditional courtyards.
