Overview of the latest economic events in the Czech Republic
The Czech economy continues to go through a period of major investment decisions and contradictory fiscal developments. The most important domestic news of the day remains the signing of the contract with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) for the construction of two new nuclear units Dukovany II. The value of the contract is approximately 407 billion crowns, while the agreement also includes the supply of nuclear fuel for additional 15 billion crowns. The project should strengthen the country's energy self-sufficiency, but its implementation is still subject to the resolution of certain legislative and judicial obstacles. According to current plans, construction could start in 2029 and the first unit should be commissioned around 2036.
Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry announced that the Czech Republic's national debt rose to a record high at the end of the first half of this year 3.504 trillion crowns. Compared to the beginning of the year, the debt increased by 139 billion crowns, which means that for every inhabitant of the Czech Republic there is theoretically a debt of 322 170 crowns. The debt ratio is thus around 42,5 % GDP, increasing the pressure for future fiscal consolidation. The ministry plans to issue more government bonds worth more than CZK 250 billion in the second half of the year.
Rising prices are also reflected in the real estate market. According to current data from the portal UlovDomov.cz and Deloitte, average rents in the second quarter of 2025 increased by 9 %. The average monthly rent is currently 17 586 crowns. In Prague and Brno, prices have remained more or less stable, but in regional cities such as Plzeň, Ostrava and Olomouc, rents are rising significantly. Analysts warn that this trend is likely to continue due to limited new construction and rising interest rates.
In terms of foreign investment, the day brought some positive news. Siemens Mobility has announced the expansion of its production plant in Ostrava, where it will work with the German company Deutsche Bahn to produce components for ICE high-speed trains. The investment exceeds 5 billion crowns and several hundred new jobs are to be created in the region.
American giant Amazon confirmed plans to build a new logistics centre near Hradec Králové. The new hub should significantly increase distribution capacity within Central Europe and shorten delivery times for Czech customers. The value of the investment is estimated at 3 billion crowns, scheduled for completion in 2026.
A Chinese company is also entering the Czech Republic BYDwhich focuses on electric vehicles and battery systems. It will open a development and testing centre in Brno to support the development of electric vehicles for the European market and to establish cooperation with local technical universities.
At the global level, the results of the Russian banking sector were interesting today. According to Bloomberg, Russian banks made a net profit in June 392 billion rubles (approximately 106 billion crowns), representing a month-on-month increase of 32.4 %. At the same time, the volume of non-performing loans is growing, which could threaten the stability of the local financial system in the future.
