NEW YORK, August 4. /TASS/. US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has congratulated Russian leader Vladimir Putin on a prisoner swap deal with a number of Western countries.
Trump told his supporters in Atlanta, Georgia, that Putin "made another great deal". But Trump said the deal was terrible for Washington. "We got our people back, but boy, we made some terrible, terrible deals," stressed the politician.
On 1 August, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that eight Russian citizens detained or sentenced in several NATO countries and two minors had returned to their homeland following a prisoner exchange at Ankara airport. One of those exchanged was Russian citizen Vadim Krasikov, who was serving a life sentence in Germany. The Russians were exchanged for a group of persons who acted in the interests of other countries.
According to US President Joe Biden, Russia has released 16 people in a prisoner swap, including former US Marine Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was convicted of espionage in Russia.
