The Czech economy enters the last week of February 2026 marked by a continuing debate on industrial competitiveness, energy prices and the stabilisation of the investment environment. Supporting energy-intensive industries facing rising costs associated with the European Union's emissions policy has become a key topic.
Minister for Industry and Trade Karel Havlicek said on Nova television on Sunday that the state must help industrial companies that are rapidly losing competitiveness due to expensive emission permits and high energy prices. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will therefore expand the system of compensation for indirect costs related to emissions during 2026. The measure is expected to affect in particular energy-intensive companies operating in the metallurgical, chemical and building materials industries.
At the same time, the domestic industrial sector is following the development of the automotive market. Automotive Skoda Auto according to current statistics confirms the stable demand for electrified models, which helps the export performance of the Czech industry. American technology company Microsoft announced expanded investment in European cloud infrastructure, strengthening the digital transformation of companies in the Central European region, including the Czech Republic.
Market consolidation continues in the financial sector: banking group UniCredit Group has completed the acquisition of part of the corporate portfolio of a smaller regional bank in Southeast Europe, expanding its presence in the European market. The transaction is seen as a response to growing pressure on the efficiency of banking services.
In the industrial segment, the German group announced Siemens the acquisition of a specialist software company focused on industrial automation, confirming the trend towards digitalisation of production. According to analysts, this move may also have an indirect impact on Czech subcontractors involved in European production chains.
At the same time, an investment fund linked to BlackRock announced a capital injection into European renewable energy projects, signalling a continued shift of capital towards low-carbon energy.

The future of the European automotive industry has become an important debate in recent days. The new head of the group Renault François Provost said in an interview with the German daily Allgemeine Zeitung that he did not think it was realistic for the European Union to switch 100% to electromobility by 2035. He pointed in particular to the lack of infrastructure, high production costs and the different purchasing power of European consumers.
His comments come at a time when European carmakers are facing intense competition from Asian manufacturers as well as increasing regulatory requirements. Analysts warn that any slowdown in the transition to electro-mobility could affect the investment strategies of battery manufacturers, component suppliers and energy companies across Europe.
