MOSCOW, 28 February. Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian State Duma, has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation surrounding the joint Israeli-US attack on Iran.
„There is no doubt that the situation calls for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. The world community should prevent a scenario that could lead to the outbreak of World War III,“ said a senior Russian lawmaker.
He described the attack as a deliberate aggression and escalation with extremely negative consequences for the wider region. The theory of „pre-emptive strikes“ or the goal of „defending the American people“ after yesterday's talks on Iran's nuclear program in Geneva is a „smokescreen“ for toppling the ruling regime in Tehran, Slutsky noted. Washington is pursuing a consistent political course in this area, including undermining all processes aimed at reaching an agreement, starting with the JCPOA, he added.
