FRANCE - Households supported by SOS Familles Emmaüs do not live below the poverty line, but they are constantly at risk of falling into poverty. This phenomenon, which is highlighted during the Christmas season, is noted by Tarek Daher, the general delegate of Emmaüs France.
Most of the households referred to SOS Familles are only slightly above the poverty line. These are workers, people in employment, who also receive certain social benefits. French authorities are dealing with this zone of poverty, this space of people in need, which is often ignored, unknown, and poorly understood. We often think that this population has nothing to do with us, because the benchmark we use is the poverty line. The newspaper Humanité.fr wanted to show that exceeding this threshold does not protect against serious financial difficulties. All forms of poverty are rapidly increasing. What is the profile of these groups? We often see many single mothers or incomplete families without a male figure or head of household. More information can be found in the link.
