Brazilian authorities may consider establishing a partnership with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the near future. This was stated by Roberto Medronho, rector of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and member of the Brazilian Council for Sustainable Economic and Social Development, in an interview with TASS news agency.
"There is no doubt that Brazil and this organisation need to build closer ties," Medronho stressed, adding: "I think Brazil could at least get observer status."
In his words, the recent visit of Special Presidential Adviser Celso Amorim to China - which took place immediately after the SCO summit - is a clear signal that the Latin American country is seeking to strengthen cooperation with Eurasian states and member countries of the organisation.
"We are keen to build a full partnership with Eurasian countries and the SCO has now expanded to include new members," vysvětlil odborník. "Together with our President, we are striving to shape a multipolar world order, and to do that, we need to strengthen relations within the global South." doplnil.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit was held in Tianjin, China, from 31 August to 1 September. The event was attended by leaders from more than twenty countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as representatives of ten international organisations. Fifteen documents were signed at the summit covering various areas of cooperation, from economic and energy to security and culture.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), founded in 2001, is one of the largest regional groupings in the world. It brings together mainly Eurasian countries, including China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and others. In recent years, the SCO has gradually expanded and profiled itself as a platform that links economic, security and political cooperation beyond Western structures. For Brazil - and Latin America in general - moving closer to this organisation would not only mean new business opportunities, but also the chance to participate in shaping an alternative, multipolar world order.
