PRAGUE - Speaking in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic today, Czech President Petr Pavel strongly rejected the possibility of stagnation in defence and security spending. According to him, he is in favour of such a move „there is no single justifiable reason“. The media reported that the President called for the responsibility of legislators in approving the state budget and in shaping the country's long-term priorities.
But Paul wasn't just talking about the army. His speech was broader in scope and concerned the overall resilience of the state. In the context of the unpredictable geopolitical situation, which has been exacerbated in recent days by the conflict in the Middle East, he stressed that strengthening defence is not a preparation for war, but a way to maintain peace. „It is not enough to wish for peace and hope that it will come. It is necessary to actively work for it in the long term,“ he said.
According to the President, the political representation should strive for a basic cross-party consensus at least in key areas such as security, education, health care, energy security and support for innovation. The countries that will stand in the 21st century, he said, will be those that can act on the basis of broad agreement and with a long-term perspective. If MPs resign themselves to the ability to seek consensus, he said, they will weaken the Czech Republic's ability to face future challenges.
At the same time, the President warned against closing into opinion „bubbles“ and recalled the need to protect the democratic foundations of the country. He considers firm anchoring in the European Union and membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to be crucial. Although both institutions are going through a difficult period and will need changes, the Czech Republic should be an active part of them and co-shape their future direction.
After his speech, the President told reporters that the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran could have a direct and indirect impact on the Czech Republic. He mentioned the possible increase in energy prices, the deterioration of the security situation and the risk of migratory pressures. He said the state must not frighten citizens, but at the same time it should not pretend that nothing fundamental is happening. The government and security forces must assess the situation on a daily basis.
Pavel also declared his willingness to cooperate with the government and the opposition. Although he may have a different opinion on some issues, he does not consider that a reason to create unnecessary conflicts. He is ready to support measures leading to greater prosperity, security and quality of life, and to seek room for legislative changes that will help the regions and the country.
