Overview of the Latest Economic Events in the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic enters June 2026 with optimistic data on business activity. In the first four months of this year, 15,503 new businesses were registered in the Czech Republic, an increase of 41 percent year-on-year. The total number of newly established businesses in the period rose by ten percent to 35,789, while the number of businesses that ceased operations decreased by six percent to 20,286. This is according to an analysis by CRIF – Czech Credit Bureau based on data from the informaceofirmach.cz portal. The increase in business activity comes despite rising energy prices and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, and reflects the adaptation of Czech businesses to new conditions.
The logistics sector has seen contrasting developments. The number of parcels shipped in the Czech Republic increased by 7.5 percent last year to 342 million, a direct reflection of the e-commerce boom. In contrast, the number of postal shipments, mainly delivered by Czech Post, decreased by 27.5 percent year-on-year to 218 million. Only 100 million standard letters were delivered, a decrease of 17 percent. This trend confirms that traditional postal services are giving way to digital communication and fast parcel delivery.
Today, investment attention is focused on ČEZ: today is the annual general meeting of the largest Czech energy group. Key agenda items include the approval of a dividend of 42 crowns per share, totaling 23 billion crowns, and personnel matters on the supervisory board. The state, as the majority shareholder, has a decisive influence on the outcome. Analysts at J&T Bank and Komerční banka also point out that a slight decrease in electricity prices and lower production in the first quarter foreshadow a more challenging economic year.
Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček announced on Monday that, in the event of a decision to sell the Pardubice-based company Explosia - a state-owned manufacturer of explosives and ammunition - it would be ideal to conclude the deal this year or in 2027. Approximately six potential buyers are currently interested in the acquisition. The market for explosives and industrial pyrotechnics is experiencing a boom due to defense demand from NATO.
Foreign Investments
In the gaming industry and data center sector, the Canadian operator of GPU clusters, Alpha Compute, completed the acquisition of a 60 percent controlling stake in the gaming platform GAMEE - one of the largest mobile gaming platforms with over 30 million users per month. The transaction, which was pending completion of a financial audit of GAMEE for the year 2025, was finalized in May. Alpha Compute also operates the ALPHA-01 data center, equipped with 504 Nvidia B200 chips, and has secured a contract from an AI research laboratory worth $32.2 million per year.
The Japanese acquisition has been finalized: the company LEIFRAS completed the acquisition of the sports and education company Tokai Sports, which operates sports education programs throughout Japan. The purchase agreement was signed on May 20; Tokai Sports becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of LEIFRAS.
In the world of technology, a strategic move by Nvidia is attracting attention: the American AI chip manufacturer has invested at least $6.5 billion in the past three months in companies developing photonic technologies – data transmission using light. This is a direct investment in a technology that could significantly reduce the energy costs of data centers and become the successor to the current electronic interconnect infrastructure.
Significant events outside the Czech Republic with global impact
The United States and Iran reached an agreement at the end of last week to extend the ceasefire for 60 days and begin specific negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, according to the Axios website, citing American officials. The agreement stipulates that commercial vessels will be able to transit the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian administration in cooperation with Oman. The framework agreement does not apply to US and Israeli military vessels. Iran has conditioned its consent on "tangible verification" of the commitments of the American side; final approval from Trump was expected over the weekend.
The impact on air transport and tourism is already being felt. Václav Havel Airport Prague has announced that operations on air routes that were suspended due to the conflict in the Middle East are gradually being restored. Flights from Prague are already available to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Tel Aviv. Flights to Doha and Sharjah are expected to be restored in June. When flights to Amman will be restored remains unclear. Airlines Emirates, Etihad Airways, and El Al are gradually reactivating their connections to the Czech Republic.
