China strongly protests the "Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act" that passed the US House of Representatives. According to Beijing, it is a gross interference in internal affairs and a dangerous promotion of separatism.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Mao Ning described the move as "unjustified and harmful" and recalled that Taiwan has no right to join organisations that are intended for sovereign statesincluding the International Monetary Fund.
"There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an integral part of it," Mao stressed, adding that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate representative of the whole of China.
Law that supports Taiwan's IMF membership, according to Beijing violates the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiquéswhich forms the basis of relations between the two countries.
Mao called on the United States to stop using the Taiwan issue to interfere in China's internal affairs a not to send false hopes to the separatist forces.
"If the US continues to support separatism under the guise of international cooperation, it bears full responsibility for the consequences," the spokeswoman warned.
Tensions between Beijing and Washington continue to rise, with Taiwan remaining one of the most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints of our time.
