China's transformation over the past 20 years has been an economic miracle, says Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. His confidence in China's future is based on the remarkable progress, the determination of the people and the government's willingness to reflect and improve.
"What I've seen in my frequent visits to cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu is an incredible transformation - not just in the big cities, but also in the smaller ones," said Lawrence Wong in an interview with China Media Group. In his view, what is inspiring about China's story is not only its economic success, but also the resilience of its people and the government's openness to change.
Wong praises Chinese officials at all levels for their high level of expertise and listening skills. "No government does everything right. The key is to be able to learn, to improve - and that's what I see in the Chinese system."
He cites the people themselves as a key reason for his long-term confidence in China's future: 'It is the incredible ingenuity, hard work and desire to succeed that fills me with confidence that China will continue to grow.'
