Police in Los Angeles begin mass arrests of curfew violators in response to protests against deportations of illegal immigrants. The situation in the Californian capital is escalating as the city faces growing unrest and tensions triggered by the immigration raids.
TASS news agency reports that police in Los Angeles continue to arrest demonstrators who violate the curfew. "Several groups continue to gather on 1st Street between Spring and Alameda. These groups are being approached and mass arrests are being initiated. A curfew is in effect," said the Los Angeles Police Department on the social network X. The police did not disclose the exact number of people arrested.
The curfew, which is in effect from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., was announced by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in response to ongoing protests and unrest downtown. The move came after a series of raids targeting the detention of undocumented migrants that began on June 6. By the evening of June 7, at least 44 people were reportedly detained on suspicion of immigration violations.
The raids sparked a wave of opposition among residents who took to the streets to voice their disapproval. However, the peaceful protests soon turned into riots, forcing the authorities to take stricter measures.
Tensions further escalated when US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles to quell the riots. This decision came without consulting California Governor Gavin Newsom, which led to legal wrangling. Newsom has filed a lawsuit against President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth for wrongfully sending troops.
