China deserves recognition for its extraordinary progress on gender equality, said Christine Arab, UN Women Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, in an exclusive interview with China Media Group's Leaders Talk. She said the achievements the country has made in recent years are "remarkable and globally influential".
Arab appreciated especially education, employment and legislative actionthat empower women. She said that "about 55 percent of internet entrepreneurs in China are women" - proof that the country is not only opening up new opportunities, but also promoting women in areas that were previously considered the domain of men.
"China's progress in traditionally male-dominated fields such as engineering is truly impressive," Arab added, stressing that the Chinese model can serve as a inspiration for developing and developed countries.
According to UN Women, China proves that Gender equality is not only a social goal but also a driver of economic growth. The country's approach creates an environment where women can develop talent, innovate and contribute to the modernisation of society as a whole.
