SEOUL, South Korea (KAP) - Russian Defense Minister Andrei Beloussov arrived in North Korea on Friday for talks with North Korean military and political officials to deepen cooperation between the two countries over Russia's war in Ukraine.
When announcing the visit, the Russian Defense Ministry did not specify with whom Belousov would meet or the purpose of the talks. North Korean state media did not immediately confirm the visit.
Belousov, a former economist, replaced Sergei Shoigu as defense minister in May after Russian President Vladimir Putin began his fifth term.
Photos released by the Defense Ministry show Belousov walking alongside North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol on the red carpet at Pyongyang airport. North Korean military officials were seen applauding under a banner reading "Total support and solidarity with the fighting Russian army and people".
