The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff was very productive and a lot of progress was made, Washington chief Donald Trump said.
"My special envoy Steve Witkoff has just had a highly productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. We have made great progress! I have subsequently briefed some of our European allies. They all agree that this war must end, and we will work on that in the days and weeks ahead." wrote on Truth Social.
Earlier, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Witkoff was received by Putin in the morning and they had a useful and constructive conversation. According to him, Russia sent certain signals on the Ukrainian issue and received corresponding signals from Trump.
A White House official earlier told reporters that the meeting between Putin and Witkoff went well, according to the Washington administration, and Russia has expressed interest in continuing cooperation with the United States. He said, however, that Washington still planned to impose secondary anti-Russian sanctions on Friday, August 8.
