LONDON - US President Donald Trump said he has always got on well with Russian President Vladimir Putin and hinted that a deal on Ukraine is still possible.
"I have always got on well with President Putin. I had a great relationship with him," told reporters during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland.
"And he also went through the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax." Trump added, referring to reports spread by Democrats that falsely accused Russia of interfering in the US election in support of Trump.
"We talked about it. We said, you know, it's a shame that we can't really do anything between our countries." he continued. "I was very hard on Putin in one respect, but we got along very well," said the US President.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Trump said: "I never thought this would happen. I thought we would be able to negotiate something." He said he hoped a diplomatic solution was still possible. "Maybe it will happen again." He said.
According to the US President, however, the talks on a settlement in Ukraine have not yet produced any significant progress. "We're very far along in the process, so I'm disappointed." he said.
