MESHED, July 9. The late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was laid to rest in his hometown of Meshhed, at the Imam Reza shrine, according to a TASS news agency report. President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash two years ago, is also buried in the same mausoleum.

The route had to be changed at the last minute because the funeral procession was unable to pass through the dense crowd, so a helicopter was used instead. Khamenei was buried along with his family members, who were also killed as a result of US-Israeli bombing attacks. Journalists were not allowed to attend the burial.

The funeral ceremony began in Tehran on July 3rd. For several days, the late Iranian Supreme Leader lay in state at the Mosalla mosque in the Iranian capital. A large funeral procession took place on July 6th. Afterwards, his remains were transported to the Iranian religious center, the city of Qom. On the evening of July 7th, Khamenei's coffin was transferred to Iraq for further ceremonies in the cities of Najaf and Karbala.
