The State Opera of Prague, a theater with an opera and ballet company, is one of the most important musical venues in Europe. The main event of the 2020 opera season was the reopening of the State Opera after several years of extensive renovation. The State Opera first presented itself to audiences with a grand opera gala exactly 132 years after its opening in 1888.

The history of the theater building, which has been called the State Opera of Prague since April 1, 1992, began in the second half of the 19th century. The neo-Renaissance theater building was built between 1886 and 1888 according to plans by the construction company Fellner and Helmer, which specialized in this type of building within the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The theater was a representative venue for Prague's German-speaking population and was called the New German Theater.

After the Velvet Revolution in November 1989, the State Opera of Prague was established as a legal entity. The first director was Karel Drgáč. He expanded the repertoire with other key works of world opera literature, but he was primarily recognized for his consistent focus on the legacy of the 20th century.

Since 2012, two opera companies have been operating under the umbrella of the National Theatre: the National Theatre Opera, whose performances can be attended in the historic building of the National Theatre and in the Estates Theatre, and the State Opera company, which performs in the building of the same name. During the theater season, both companies offer a total of over 40 opera performances per month, with a diverse repertoire ranging from the Baroque period to works by contemporary composers.
