LIBREVILLE - Sunday's presidential election in Gabon was won by the country's incumbent leader Brice Oligui Nguema, who led a military coup in the country in August 2023. Preliminary results show the 50-year-old Nguema won 90.35 percent of the vote, Reuters reported, citing Gabon's interior minister.
The coup took place immediately after the announcement of the election results, according to which the rule of the Bong family, which had lasted for more than half a century, was to continue. Bongo took over as president in 2009 after the death of his father, who had ruled Gabon for 41 years.
The former French colony is a member of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), but its oil wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few. According to the World Bank, nearly 40 percent of Gabonese aged 15 to 24 were unemployed in 2020. Gabon's oil export revenues were six billion dollars in 2022, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
