ATHENS - Ukraine's state-owned energy company Naftohaz today announced an agreement with Greek gas firm DEPA for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US to Ukraine. This was reported by AFP and Reuters. According to Naftohaz officials, the deal is intended to help ensure stable gas supplies for the upcoming winter season, when the country continues to face intense Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
The contract envisages that LNG will flow to Europe via Greek terminals, where it will be regassified and transported to the Ukrainian gas network. The exact volume and financial terms of the contract were not immediately disclosed, but both companies stressed its strategic importance. „This step strengthens Ukraine's energy security and expands our opportunities to obtain gas from independent, reliable sources,“ Naftohaz said in a statement.
The Greek DEPA described cooperation with Ukraine as an important contribution to European energy solidarity. According to the company, the agreement confirms Greece's growing role as a gateway for LNG to the European market. Athens has been investing in recent years to expand its terminal capacity to meet demand from Central and South-Eastern European countries.
Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, Ukraine has been trying to diversify its energy resources and minimise its dependence on gas transit through its own territory. Repeated attacks on power plants, heating plants and storage facilities this year have significantly increased fears of energy shortages during the winter. The new agreement with DEPA is intended to mitigate the risk of outages and provide Kiev with greater certainty in planning its consumption during peak periods.
