Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar has won the world championship in the road race. He is the third rider to win the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France, and the world championship in the same year – a feat previously achieved by Belgian Eddy Merckx (1974) and Irishman Stephen Roche (1987). This raises the question: What is more significant? Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel also won the time trial at the world championships in Zurich, following his victories in the time trial and road race at the Olympic Games in Paris. He became the first rider to achieve this double victory under the Olympic flag.

Australian Ben O'Connor took silver, and defending champion Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands won bronze. Czech representative Mathias Vacek finished in 20th place. The 22-year-old rider from the elite team Lidl-Trek was in control of the race, but his strength began to fade in the final kilometers. He lost almost four minutes to Pogačar.

A tragedy has marred the world championships: the death of a junior rider. Eighteen-year-old Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer died on Friday from injuries sustained in a crash during Thursday's junior women's road race at the world championships in Zurich. She suffered a serious head injury after a collision and was in critical condition. The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced her death.

Furrer was involved in a collision during the race in heavy rain, resulting in a severe head injury. She was transported to the hospital by helicopter. The UCI had already described her condition as "very critical" on Thursday.

"The international cycling community has lost a rider with a bright future," said the UCI. The union announced that, despite the seriousness of the situation, it intends to continue the championships according to the original schedule. "In accordance with the wishes of the family of Muriel Furrer, the world championships will continue as planned," it announced.
