WASHINGTON - The United States and Iran have reached an agreement aimed at resolving the conflict. The signing of the agreement is scheduled for June 19th in Geneva. The U.S. naval blockade of Iran will end on June 15th, while military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, will cease immediately and irrevocably, according to Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister.
According to him, the parties will negotiate during the 60-day ceasefire to ease sanctions against Iran, the Iranian nuclear program, reconstruction of the country, economic development, and mechanisms for ensuring compliance with the future agreement. The Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized that the start of negotiations depends on the actions of the United States, including ending military operations, lifting the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and releasing Iranian assets.
The TASS agency summarized the key statements of the parties involved and international reactions.
Statement by the United States
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the signing of the agreement with the Islamic Republic would take place on June 19th.
The U.S. leader thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping for their role in supporting efforts to resolve the conflict with Iran.
Trump announced the immediate lifting of the U.S. naval blockade of Iran and stated that he had authorized the opening of the Strait of Hormuz for free passage. According to him, the strait will be reopened after the signing of the agreement on June 19th for demining operations.
Negotiations on a possible 20-year suspension of Iran's uranium enrichment are still ongoing, but Washington may also accept a 15-year freeze. Trump suggested that a 15-year suspension could be considered acceptable, but also said that Iran would be permanently limited to a low level of enrichment that the military could never use, according to The New York Times, citing an interview with the U.S. president.
The United States will not yet address the disposal of Iran's stockpile of nuclear fuel. "We'll get to the nuclear waste later, when we're ready to go in there and do it. I would say, in the next month or two, there's no rush," Trump said.
If a final agreement is not reached with Iran, the United States will either resume military operations against the country or take on the role of "guardian of the Middle East" in exchange for 20 percent of the region's income.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance hailed the agreement with Iran as a major victory for the United States. According to him, the agreement could change the face of the Middle East for the next 50 years.
Trump also stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is satisfied with the terms of the agreement that is to be signed.
Statement by Iran
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that "the text of the memorandum of understanding has been completed and the official signing will take place on Friday in Switzerland."
The Iranian agency Mehr reported that the Strait of Hormuz will be fully reopened within 30 days after the signing of the agreement between Iran and the United States.
According to Mehr, the United States will be obligated within one month to lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports and withdraw its military contingent from areas bordering the Islamic Republic. The agency also reports that the United States will refrain from imposing new sanctions against Iran during the final round of negotiations and will not send additional forces to the Middle East. At the same time, the ceasefire is expected to take effect immediately "on all fronts," including Lebanon.
The agency also reported that the United States must release approximately $12 billion in Iranian assets and an additional $12 billion within 60 days before the final phase of negotiations begins, after which the ceasefire and consultations will continue. However, Washington denied that it had an obligation to release $12 billion in assets before the negotiations.
Iran estimates the damages at $300 billion and claims that the United States and its allies should present a plan for the country's reconstruction.
Iran and the United States have agreed to establish a mechanism for monitoring the implementation of the agreement, the provisions of which will be enshrined in a relevant resolution of the UN Security Council.
According to Gharibabadi, the parties will negotiate during the 60-day ceasefire on easing sanctions against Iran, the Iranian nuclear program, the reconstruction of the country, and economic development, as well as on mechanisms for ensuring compliance with commitments.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs added that the start of negotiations depends on the actions of the United States, including the cessation of military operations, the lifting of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the release of Iranian assets.
Efforts of Mediators
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that the United States and Iran have reached a peace agreement, with a signing ceremony planned for June 19 in Switzerland.
He noted that both sides have announced an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Sharif stated that a series of meetings involving mediators will take place before the signing of the agreement.
The Pakistani Prime Minister also thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for their contribution to achieving a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
Ceremony in Geneva
According to The New York Times, Iran will be represented by the Speaker of the Majlis, the unicameral parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi.
The United States will be represented by Vice President JD Vance. The New York Times notes that if the event takes place, it will be the highest level of meeting between Washington and Tehran in almost half a century.
Vance previously told Fox News that Trump might also travel to Geneva to sign the agreement.
International Reactions
The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it an extremely important step towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Guterres confirmed that the UN is ready to support the parties in achieving a sustainable and comprehensive peace.
The agreement was also welcomed by the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and France. They stated that they are ready to lift sanctions in response to clear and verifiable steps taken by Iran within its nuclear program. They added that they are considering cooperation with the United States, Iran, and the International Atomic Energy Agency to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also stated that the United Kingdom and France are ready to support the resumption of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, including the possible deployment of a defensive, independent multinational mission, the planning of which they have been conducting, especially with the aim of providing coordinated support for demining operations.
Japan, Australia, and New Zealand welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran and expressed hope for a swift restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
