PRAGUE - ANO chairman and former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš handed Czech President Petr Pavel a list of candidates for ministerial posts in the emerging coalition of ANO, SPD and the Motorists. The most notable nomination is that of Motorist MP Filip Turek, who was originally supposed to be nominated for the Foreign Ministry, but was eventually nominated for the Environment Ministry. According to the proposal, the Foreign Ministry is to be occupied by the chairman of the Motorists, Petr Macinka.
Czech President Petr Pavel strongly disagrees with Turk's nomination, according to ČT24. Babiš said that the President has legal reservations about Turk and that he intends to address the issue with Petr Macinka in the Chamber of Deputies. Only then will the coalition council meet, which may modify the proposal.
Motorist nominations have long been controversial. According to Reuters, Turek has faced criticism over past statements and social media posts. Czech President Petr Pavel has previously warned that he does not consider Turek a suitable member of the government if some of the controversial statements are confirmed to be authentic. The Macinka-Turek row, which the coalition presented in a friendly manner towards the Castle, does not resolve the situation, according to the president.
The cabinet proposal, which former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš handed over to the Czech President, also includes former ANO ministers - Alena Schillerová in finance, Karel Havlíček in industry, Lubomír Metnar in the interior and Adam Vojtěch in health care. The new faces are to be Aleš Juchelka for Labour and Social Affairs, Zuzana Schwarz Bařtipánová for Regional Development and Jeroným Tejc for Justice. The SPD is to occupy, among other things, the ministries of defence and agriculture, while the Motorists are also to occupy culture and transport.
Czech President Petr Pavel is planning a series of personal consultations with each of the nominees separately, which are scheduled to begin on Friday and take place within two weeks. Only then will he decide whether he will accept the proposed cabinet or whether further adjustments will be needed. Another important element remains the president's condition that former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš publicly disclose how he will resolve his conflict of interest related to the Agrofert holding.
The clash over Filip Turk could slow down the coalition deal or force the Motorists to renominate. Czech President Petr Pavel may accept the government in December, and a vote of confidence could take place in January.
