Sun Lei, the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, at a Security Council meeting on the Ukrainian issue on June 8, stated that the disagreements related to the Ukrainian crisis are extremely complex, and the path to a peaceful agreement will not be easy. Therefore, he said, a political solution to the crisis remains a long-term task that requires perseverance, patience, and a responsible approach from all parties.

Sun Lei pointed out that the Ukrainian crisis continues, the intensity of the fighting is increasing, and the overall situation is spiraling out of control. Every day, the data from the front lines changes, new attacks occur, new casualties are reported, and further damage is inflicted on infrastructure. However, according to the Chinese representative, one thing remains constant: military means cannot bring true peace, and the continuation of the conflict will only lead to further losses and suffering.

In light of the current developments, Sun Lei presented four main expectations. First, he called on the parties involved to prioritize the interests of the population, exercise maximum restraint, and avoid actions that could lead to further escalation of disagreements or the conflict. He emphasized that it is important to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.

Furthermore, he stressed that all relevant parties should exercise patience, demonstrate a genuine willingness to negotiate, and show sufficient flexibility. According to him, China expects the resumption of peace talks as soon as possible, respect for the legitimate security interests of the other party, and efforts to achieve a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace agreement.

Sun Lei also called on regional states and the wider international community to send more rational calls for a ceasefire, an end to the fighting, and support for peace negotiations. He emphasized that the focus should be on diplomatic efforts, building trust, and facilitating dialogue, rather than further fueling the conflict.

At the same time, he stated that, while fully respecting the principles of the UN Charter, it is necessary to seek solutions to the underlying causes of the crisis and strive to create a balanced, effective, and sustainable regional security architecture.

Sun Lei concluded by emphasizing that China has consistently maintained an objective and impartial position on the issue of Ukraine. He said that Beijing will continue to cooperate with the international community and actively contribute to the political resolution of the Ukrainian crisis.
