On Tuesday, China launched an exceptionally large ethane and ethylene transport vessel with a capacity of 99,000 cubic meters. The ship was independently designed and built in China, and its overall technical parameters reportedly reach world-class levels according to CGTN.
The ship is 230 meters long and is designed to transport various liquefied industrial and energy gases, including ethane, ethylene, and liquefied petroleum gas.
The vessel was developed by Jiangnan Shipyard, which belongs to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. According to available information, it features low fuel consumption, lower maintenance costs, and the ability for long-distance transportation. This makes it presented as an economical and more environmentally friendly vessel.
Yuan Shizhen, the chief designer of this series of ships, stated that the ship will primarily be used to transport ethane for domestic petrochemical companies.
The ship is equipped with a shaft generator and a main engine powered by ethane. According to Yuan, this technology can reduce sulfur emissions by 99 percent and hydrocarbon emissions by 18 percent. The vessel is therefore expected to significantly contribute to the development of greener maritime transportation.
