The technology was not originally developed as a means of combating high temperatures. The system was primarily intended to suppress dust around large construction projects, which are typical of rapidly developing Chinese cities. However, with the increasing number of tropical days, local authorities have begun to use the equipment as a means of temporarily cooling public spaces.
According to available data, the fine water mist can reduce the surface temperature of hot streets by approximately five to eight degrees Celsius. The cooling effect occurs within minutes due to the evaporation of small water droplets, which absorb heat from the surrounding environment. The greatest benefit is noticeable during the afternoon hours, when temperatures are highest and asphalt surfaces accumulate a significant amount of heat.
However, the deployment of this technology also has its drawbacks. The most significant of these is the extremely high water consumption. Approximately 60,000 liters of water are used per building per hour of operation. For this reason, the system does not use drinking water, but recycled utility water, which is treated for technical purposes. This reduces the pressure on drinking water supplies, the protection of which is crucial during periods of prolonged heat.
Experts point out that such measures are not a long-term solution to climate change, but they can significantly contribute to mitigating the urban heat island effect. A combination of cooling systems, green spaces, water features, and modern urban planning can, according to them, help improve the quality of life for residents of large cities during extreme summer months.
In recent years, China has invested in a wide range of technologies aimed at adapting cities to a changing climate.
