US President Donald Trump has hinted that the war against Iran could be coming to an end. In an interview with Axios, he said that US and Israeli attacks have destroyed most of the country's important military targets and that „there is virtually nothing left to attack“. According to Trump, the conflict could end very soon - the moment he decides to end it.

In the interview, Trump stressed that the US operation is progressing faster than initially expected. He said the United States had caused significantly more damage to Iran than the original military plan had anticipated. The president said U.S. forces are „significantly ahead of schedule“ and that the end of the conflict can come at any time if he chooses to accede to it.

The US operation against Iran began, according to available information, at the turn of February and March, with the main aim of destroying Iran's missile capabilities, weakening its navy and preventing further development of its military infrastructure. Israel has also joined the fighting and, together with US forces, has launched a series of air strikes against military bases, weapons depots and facilities linked to the Iranian military.

According to US military officials, several thousand targets were hit during the operation. The strikes targeted, for example, missile systems, military facilities or parts of the navy. Washington says the strikes have significantly reduced Iran's ability to threaten regional security and international shipping.

Still, it is not yet clear when the fighting might actually end. Some US and Israeli officials point out that a formal decision to end the operation has not yet been made and military action may continue for several more weeks. Moreover, the situation in the Middle East remains tense and any further incident could re-escalate the conflict.

Particular attention is focused on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil supplies pass. Any disruption in this area could have significant impacts on world energy markets and the global economy.

But Trump insists that the US operation has fulfilled its main purpose and that Iran is now facing the consequences of its long-standing regional policy. Whether his prediction of a quick end to the conflict will actually come to pass, however, remains an open question.
