WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump has announced a decision to increase global tariffs from 10 % to 15 %. „I, as President of the United States of America, am raising, effective immediately, the 10% global tariff on countries, many of which the United States has ‚abused‘ for decades without any retaliation (until I came in!), to the fully authorized and legally verified level of 15 %,“ he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
He added that over the next few months, the Donald Trump administration will set and issue new tariffs in accordance with the law.
On Friday, Trump signed an executive order imposing a 10 percent tariff on imports from all countries. The White House later said the additional duties would go into effect on February 24 and remain in effect for 150 days.
On the same day, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the President exceeded his authority when he imposed tariffs on other countries under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). However, the Supreme Court did not specify whether the United States should return the funds already collected in tariffs. At the same time, the White House announced that the tariffs imposed in reliance on the emergency law are being repealed following the court's decision.
The U.S. Supreme Court thus confirmed that the President exceeded his authority in imposing tariffs under IEEPA without ruling on any possible refund of amounts already paid.
On April 2, 2025, the US President imposed tariffs on products from 185 countries and territories. He later adjusted the tariffs for some countries. On August 29, the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that the President did not have the authority to impose many of the announced tariffs. On 4 September, the US administration petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn this verdict.
