Overview of Recent Economic Events in the Czech Republic
The Prague Stock Exchange reached its historical high for the sixth consecutive time, with the PX index rising by 0.18% to a record 2750.97 points. The growth was primarily driven by shares of the energy company ČEZ, which benefited from stable electricity prices and expectations of solid financial results. Shares of Erste Group Bank, Kofola ČeskoSlovensko, and Colt CZ Group also performed well, while the banking sector as a whole was mixed, with a slight decline in shares of Moneta Money Bank and Komerční banka.
Positive news is also coming from the perspective of households. Fuel prices in the Czech Republic continue to decline at the beginning of the year. According to data from the company CCS, the price of Natural 95 gasoline fell by 24 haléřů (approximately 9 US cents) last week to an average of 33.07 Kč (approximately $1.35 USD) per liter, while diesel fell to 32.35 Kč/l (approximately $1.30 USD per liter), which is 20 haléřů (approximately 8 US cents) less than the previous week. This development is easing inflationary pressures and supporting consumer demand.
From a macroeconomic perspective, the development of public finances is noteworthy. In 2025, the state collected a total of 1.54 trillion crowns in taxes, representing a year-on-year increase of 8.1%. The fastest growth was in tax revenues from both corporate and individual income, reflecting the relatively good condition of the business sector and the labor market.
Foreign Investments
Foreign investment activity remains exceptionally strong at the beginning of 2026. The Czech investment group DRFG entered the Croatian real estate market by acquiring the ZTC shopping center in Rijeka for more than one billion crowns.
In the industrial sector, the German conglomerate Knorr-Bremse completed the acquisition of the Swiss company Duagon Group, strengthening its technological portfolio in the railway transportation sector.
The American investment group KKR also completed the acquisition of the sports private equity firm Arctos for approximately one billion dollars, further increasing its exposure in the sports and entertainment industry.
Another significant transaction is the acquisition of TOFWERK AG, a Swiss manufacturer of analytical instruments, by Bruker Corporation, as well as the acquisition of a portion of the space business of L3Harris Technologies by the investor AE Industrial Partners.
Significant Events Outside the Czech Republic with Global Impact
Meanwhile, the European Commission is intensifying regulatory pressure on technology companies. The American company X Corp, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has received an official request for information regarding the Grok chatbot. The response from Brussels comes after a scandal in which the system generated sexually suggestive content, and the European Commission has ordered the company to retain all relevant documents related to Grok until the end of 2026. This move could have a significant impact on the future regulation of artificial intelligence in the European Union and globally.
